Obituary for Johnny Rex Epperson

Funeral services for Johnny Epperson, 59, of Brownsboro, are scheduled for 3:00 P.M., Sunday, October 17, 2021 at Westwood Baptist Church in Tyler with Pastor Tracy Holcomb officiating. Interment will follow at Concord Cemetery, near Gilmer, under the direction of Chandler Memorial Funeral Home.

Johnny passed away October 12, 2021 in Tyler.

Johnny Rex Epperson was born November 16, 1961 in Mt. Pleasant, the son of Cecil Rex Epperson and Dorothy Guy (Hively) Rhea. He graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1981 and served in the United States Navy from 1984 until 1993. Johnny “Mudslide” spent more than 25 years as a truck driver, working most recently with Rig Runners. His love for his country prompted him to work overseas in Iraq from 2009-2010 driving trucks as his way of helping his fellow service men and women. Johnny enjoyed riding motorcycles, camping, traveling, and history. He was extremely generous, the kindest person you would ever meet, a wonderful husband to his ‘Honey’, and the most incredible father and ‘Papa’ to his children and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Cecil Epperson; dad, Max Rhea, and sister, Melissa Rhea.

Survivors include wife, Julie Epperson of Brownsboro; mother, Dorothy Rhea of Pittsburg; children, Jessica Brown and husband Justin of Chandler, Amanda Bass and husband John of Hanscom A.F.B., Massachusetts, Tony Epperson of Hanford, California, Herbie Travis and wife Channing of Lindale; siblings, W.A. Epperson and wife Jennifer of Pittsburg, Penny Snelgrow and husband Dan of Pittsburg, Lynn Hembree of Atlanta, Bridgett Dyar and husband Rusty of Union Grove; grandchildren, Ryan Brown, Evan Brown, Madeline Bass, Nicholas Bass, Declan Bass, Willow Bass, Brayden Epperson, Kayley Travis, Aubrey Travis, Jakobe McKinzie, Trenton McKinzie, Tenley McKinzie, as well as numerous nieces, nephews other relatives and a host of friends.

A visitation will be held Saturday, October 16, 2021 from 6-8:00 p.m. at Chandler Memorial Funeral Home.

Serving as pallbearers will be W.A. Epperson, Dan Snelgrow, Tony Epperson, Justin Brown, John Bass, Herbie Travis, Ryan Brown, and Kenneth Ellison. Honorary pallbearers will be Danny Snelgrow, Luke Haskins, and Kevin Blount.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a veteran’s organization of choice.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Chandler Memorial Funeral Home family.
