Graveside services for Emogene Tompkins, 84, of Chandler, are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Monday, February 21, 2022, at Chandler Memorial Cemetery officiated by Rev. Joanne Elston. Services will be under the direction of Chandler Memorial Funeral Home.
Ms. Tompkins passed away on February 19, 2022, in Athens.
Emogene (Lewis) Tompkins was born July 22, 1937, in Tyler, Texas, the daughter of E.A. (Son) Lewis and Lucille (Wilkinson) Lewis. She graduated from John Tyler High School, attended Tyler Junior College before obtaining her Bachelor of Education from Stephen F. Austin State University and later her Masters in Education from East Texas State University in Commerce. Emogene began her 33 year teaching career in 1959 and spent her entire career at Brownsboro High School. She taught all business classes consisting of typing, shorthand, record keeping, accounting, 10-key and bookkeeping. It has been said on numerous occasions that she was the reason that everyone in this area learned to type. She was very active during her tenure and was the pep squad and cheerleader sponsor for many years. If you ever attended Brownsboro High School during her time there, you always knew when she was around and never had to wonder how much she loved and cared for you. Granny was very active in her children’s and grandchildren’s lives and attended every possible activity that they were involved in. She will be missed greatly by all the many people she touched.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 52 years Billy Ben Tompkins and two brothers, Sonny and Kenneth Lewis.
Survivors include her children, Tonya Tompkins of Chandler, Ty Tompkins and wife Belinda of Chandler, Clay Tompkins and wife Tina; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m., Sunday, February 20, 2022, at Chandler Memorial Funeral Home.
