Obituary for Christopher C. Pledger

A celebration of the life of Christopher C. Pledger, 92, of Ben Wheeler, is scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 22, 2022, at Chandler Memorial Funeral Home, with Pastor Charles Turner officiating.

Mr. Pledger passed away in the arms of his loving wife on September 3, 2022, in Ben Wheeler.

Chris Pledger was born October 11, 1929, in Fate, Texas, the son of Christopher Columbus Pledger, Sr. and Nina Oliver (Holland) Woodall. He served in the United States Army from 1947 until 1950, with much of that time spent overseas, and continued as an active reserve until 1954. Chris worked for the Fort Worth Police Department for seven years, was the director of the Tarrant County Department of Health and the City of Irving Director of Health, a city manager and assistant city manager for Jacksonville and Whitehouse, and registered sanitarian number 74 with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. He was an accomplished musician and proficient with many instruments. Chris loved going to beaches, feeding the seagulls, and was often called an animal whisperer. Chris was a Grace Missionary Baptist Church member and enjoyed studying the bible. He will be remembered as honest, courageous, loving, kind, and witty to those he leaves behind.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Jane (Cavanaugh) Pledger; wife, Joyce F. (Richardson) Pledger; son, David Pledger; and eight brothers and sisters.

Survivors include wife Nancy Pledger of Ben Wheeler; children Mike Pledger of Troup and Vicki Bell of Van; six grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends, with great love and regards to his son-in-law, Robert Bell, USMC ret.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the VFW or the American Legion.

In the words of Chris, “I love your forever, plus three days.”
