Obituary for Carol Jane Smith (McDowell)

Carol Smith, 82, of Tyler, passed away on April 13, 2023, in Tyler.

Carol Jane (McDowell) Smith was born on August 6, 1940, in East Spencer, North Carolina, the daughter of Patrick Glenn McDowell and Bertie Mae (Grubb) McDowell. She graduated from East Spencer High School in 1958 and attended San Jacinto Junior College in Pasadena, Texas. Carol worked as an executive secretary throughout her career at numerous companies, including Houston Lighting and Power, the Moon Rock Lab at NASA during the Apollo Mission, and lastly, retired as the supervisor in the Kyle Chapman Branch of the Harris County Tax Office. After playing on the varsity team in high school, she was a lifelong basketball fan and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Carol was president of the PTA and the Boy Scouts and was a Worthy Matron and life member of the South Houston Chapter 1295 of the Order of the Eastern Star. Carol had a generous heart, was full of vim and vigor, and cared deeply about her family, friends, and community. She will be missed by all those that knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elbert Earl “Bo” Smith; and her siblings, Blanche Vaden, Patrick McDowell, Jr., Bill McDowell, Bob McDowell, Jack McDowell, and Gail Cox.

Survivors include her children, Brian Smith and wife Suzanne of Tyler, Janice Smith of Lake Jackson; her sister, Patsy Sides of Salisbury, North Carolina; and her grandchildren, Joshua Smith, Mary-Elizabeth Langdon and husband Anthony, Seth Woodard, and John Allan Woodard.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Chandler Memorial Funeral Home family.
