Obituary for Bertha Lucille McCurley (Addkison)

Memorial services for Bertha Lucille Addkison McCurley, 82, of Brownsboro will be held Thursday, May 2, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. at the Chandler Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Rick Gray officiating.

Bertha Lucille Addkison McCurley was born north of Brownsboro and south of Edom on January 21, 1937. Her parents were Elmer Matt (Pee Wee) Addkison and Madgline Young Addkison. Her childhood was interrupted by World War II when her father shipped off to Hawaii as a Marine. After the war, her father returned home and in due time her sister, Katy Jane, was born.

She attended Brownsboro Schools. She met her future husband, Gordon McCurley, while still in high school. They became engaged just before he had to ship out to Panama for two years to fulfill his military obligation. When he returned, they married and in due time had three children, Michael Gene, Shirley Ann and Carl Jay McCurley.

She worked at Curtis Mathis in Athens for almost 20 years until deciding to go to cosmetology school and had a career as a nail technician. Her real passion was for travel and was always ready for new adventures. She had a gift for striking up conversations with other travelers while exploring. She had a particular fondness for babies, little kids, mountains and the ocean.

She was loved and will be missed by numerous friends and family.
