Obituary for Alton Lee Newman

Alton Newman, known to friends as "Al," passed away on November 2, 2018, at the age of 91 years.

A longtime resident of Chandler, Texas Al had recently moved to Houston to be closer to family. Al was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Wanda Ruth (McKee) Newman, his parents, Walter Lee Newman and Mary Alice (McGregor) Newman, and brother, Walter Marion Newman.

A Navy veteran of World War II, Al attended Texas A&M after returning from the Pacific theater. Al worked his entire career with the company that would become BP Amoco Oil; starting as a meterman and working his way up to District Foreman for the North Cowden plant near Odessa, TX before retiring in 1985.

After his retirement, Al and Wanda moved to Chandler, and spent several years hosting friends and family in their home at Lake Palestine before moving to “town”. Grandchildren Jessica, Chace, Alyssa, Blake and Samantha shared many fond times with “Papa” fishing, gardening, bird-watching, golfing, working puzzles, and driving the tractor for hours in the back yard.

Al had a heart for service, and volunteered for many organizations in Chandler over the years, including: Meals on Wheels, Keep Chandler Beautiful, the food pantry and others.

He is survived by daughter Sharon Lee Cobb (Craig), their children: Jessica, Chace (Tara), and Alyssa Lyon (Chip); son John David Newman (Robin), their children, Blake (Kyndra), and Samantha Newman (Stephen); great granddaughters Bennett and Elliott Cobb, Grace and Audrey Forristall, and Addisyn Newman; great grandsons Jaxson Newman and Carter Lyon as well as two nieces, five nephews, a brother-in-law and two sisters-in-law.

He will be sincerely missed by his Sweet Sue’s Saturday breakfast partner, Lola Ruddy.

The family wishes to thank Emily Little, Cy Ditzler and Janice Hamman for the support and many kindnesses afforded to Al, Sharon, and David during the last several months.

A celebration of Al’s life will be held at 1 pm, on Saturday, November 10, at the Chandler Funeral Home, 205 S. Broad Street, Chandler, Texas, with Cecil Linke officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider memorial donations to the Wounded Warrior Project, www.woundedwarriorproject.org or Meals on Wheels Ministry of East Texas, www.mowet.org.
